Car Maintenance to Perform Before Going on a Long Trip
There is a good reason why many people are hesitant about travelling long distances in their vehicles. This is especially true when the machine has accumulated considereable mileage and years. Surprisingly, as compared to day-to-day driving, road tripping is actually easier because you can always have the car thoroughly checked before embarking on one. The only problem, though, is a breakdown far away from home. An unfortunate event like that can totally ruin what could have been a fun and exciting holiday. However, there are simple checks that you can do to save yourself from any mechanical situation while on route to your destination. And the key is to begin early.
2-4 Weeks Prior
- Complete major repairs. This should be started at least a month before going on a vacation, which should give you more time to go back to the shop for any related problems that might pop up.
- Inspect the coolant. Whether you are going to a cooler or warmer place, the water and antifreeze mixture should be checked to ensure that the vehicle maintains the right temperature. If this liquid needs changing, then you better do it right away.
- Examine the tire's pressure. Explosions are usually caused by the extra heat that builds up when driving at high speeds and the insuffucient inflation of the wheels. When doing this step, have the treads looked at by a mechanic to determine if you need to buy replacements for old ones. Do all these instructions to the spare as well.
1 Week Prior
- Repeat the measures enumerated above. Any scheduled maintenance should be done by this time. For instance, if the machine is due for an oil change soon, have it done now rather than later during the trip. Also, the tire pressure should not have changed since the last time you checked.
- Clean your car. Fuel burns more if you carry more stuff, so throw off board all unnecessary things. Likewise, the air filter should be checked to econimise on fuel. Last, vacuum the floor and the seat.
- Gas up. It is expensive to fill up while going to your destination, so you might as well do this in the petrol station at home.
