How To Save Money When Shopping on a Holiday

There is something about being on a holiday that makes you feel different, especially when you are in a foreign and beautiful place. It makes you feel bold and adventurous. But sometimes that boldness can manifest itself in the way you spend your money too. You suddenly seem to forget that you have bills waiting at home, and so you eat at every charming restaurant that you see and you buy trinkets from every shop that you walk by. Before you know it, you have spent half of your life savings, and you find yourself having to scrimp and save for the rest of the year.

You can prevent this scenario from happening to you by doing one simple thing - make a shopping list. Most people think shopping lists are unnecessary. They think holidays are supposed to be fun and spontaneous, which should be the case of course, but when it comes to money matters, one should proceed with more caution. Making a list of things to buy before you head out of your hotel room will actually save you from making any impulse purchases. It is these "small" impulse buys that can add a hefty sum to your credit card bill.

When you do see something that you like, do not buy it right away. Take time to look at other shops nearby and see if you can get the same product at a cheaper price. If the country you are visiting has markets where haggling is a normal practise, do not be afraid to ask for a bargain yourself. It might feel unnatural to you, but you will end up saving a lot of money.
