Famous Types of Red Wines in Europe
There are many grape varieties that can be found in many places around the world. They vary based on the kinds of soil, the climate, and the way they are propagated. That is why there are also many types of wine because these are the main ingredients in producing this liquor. Here are some of the most common variants that can be found in different European regions.
- Merlot
This variety has the mixed scents of herbal and plum flavours. It is a flexible type of beverage as it can be accompanied with almost any kind of food. It is also suitable for those who are new into this kind of liquor as it is easy to drink. It is commonly found in the regions of Romania and Italy in Europe. But it is also being produced in some areas in Washington, California, Australia and even in Chile.
- Pinot Noir
This variant is one of those that have a low tannin levels, making it a soft and light drink. It has a distinct fruity aroma of strawberry, plums, and cherry. It is usually paired with grilled foods like chicken, lamb and even salmon. Although the type of grape that is used in producing it is hard to grow, it can be found in Burgundy, France. It is also produced in some other countries such as New Zealand and in the US.
- Zinfandel
This type has a usual taste of pepper, spiciness of oak and fruit berries, which can be found in most wines. It sometimes comes in a higher level of alcohol, which gives it a full-bodied flavour. It is best paired with tomato sauce-based foods and grilled meat. It is commonly found in California because the type of grape used in making it only grows in warmer climate.
- Barbera
This type shares some similar flavours with Merlot, which also makes it a perfect pair for any type of food. But it has a unique texture and an excellent acid taste. It originated in many part of Italy but it is also being produced in California nowadays.
- Shiraz
Also known as Syrah, this variety has the scent of wild black fruits and peppers accompanied with some smoky flavours. It has high level of tannin, which makes it a full bodied beverage. It goes perfect with any grilled or stewed meat, preferably beef. It is usually aged in oak barrels, which adds its rich taste. It can be found in some regions in France, South Africa, California and Australia.
